How We Helped Find Rebekah Gould’s Killer: A 16-Year Journey to Justice
Rebekah Gould was murdered inside her boyfriend’s home in 2004 but, despite information that could have led authorities to the killer in the days following her death, her case went unsolved for over 16 years.

Sensing an opportunity for justice, investigative journalist George Jared teamed up with Former U.S. Army Counterintelligence Agent-turned-private investigator Jennifer Bucholtz in an effort to find Rebekah’s killer. Over the course of the next two years the duo reignited the investigation utilizing media and crowd-sourcing techniques. The heightened public awareness helped pressure law enforcement into assigning a new investigator to Rebekah’s case.

An arrest was made just months later.

In this session, Bucholtz and Jared will discuss the pitfalls of confirmation bias, the benefits of utilizing a wide variety of resources to solve cold cases, and their incredible direct communications with the man who was ultimately arrested for the murder.

Entering the Dark: On the Trail of Serial Killers
You can see them, but you look right through them. Some are transparent while they study their victims, learn their habits, and ascertain their vulnerabilities. They are silent predators – until they strike, committing unspeakable acts against their hapless victims. As they find new ways to hunt their prey, law enforcement endeavors to look for new ways to catch them. Have advancements in law enforcement, forensic science, and psychology given us inroads into catching them? How does the identity of an active serial killer come to the attention of the police?

By using case examples, this presentation by CC alumni speaker John White, a psychology professor and former investigator sergeant, will delineate how the most psychopathic criminals among us, both popular as well as more obscure killers, are caught and convicted.

Don’t F**k with Cats: Behind the Search for an Internet Killer
In 2019 Netflix released one of its biggest true crime docu-series in years: Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer. In it, a team of online citizen detectives pushed investigators toward finding and arresting Luka Magnotta, a Montreal man who went from torturing and killing animals to eventually killing and dismembering a man named Jun Lin.

Now attendees will get to hear directly from John Green and Deanna Thompson (aka “Baudi Moovan”), two of the key online sleuths behind the hunt for Magnotta. They’ll talk about what viewers did not see in the doc, as well as just how much work goes into cracking open a case like this. They’ll also touch on the premise behind their overall mission: those who torture animals are very likely to eventually move up to killing humans. (This premise will be explored more deeply in another session: “Animal Beta Project”).

Attendees will have an opportunity for Q&A and to find out how they can participate more actively in future citizen-based investigations.

The Safety Trap
Spencer Coursen’s bio reads like something out of an action movie. He was an Airborne Ranger. He fought in Afghanistan. He worked for the government. He’s conducted more than 300 protective operations in more than 100 countries. He’s protected so many celebrities he could host his own highlight reel on TMZ. And, if all of that doesn’t sound impressive enough, he’s also proficient in “offensive and defensive driving, escape and evasion measures, and surveillance and counter-surveillance operations.”

In other words, Kevin Costner’s character in The Bodyguard was based on him.

(OK, that’s not actually confirmed, but it’s a theory.) In reality, he was the security consultant on the film Zero Dark Thirty and is the author of the best selling book, The Safety Trap.

Sometimes feeling safe is the most dangerous thing we do. This is the paradox of the "Safety Trap." In this session, Coursen will show you how to succeed in staying safe using real world examples from his global experience keeping celebrities, sports stars, models and more out of some of the most dangerous situations you don't want to imagine.

The Austin Serial Bomber: 19 Days of Terror
Over the course of 19 days in March of 2018, the city of Austin was terrorized by a series of cold and calculated bombings that took the lives of two people and injured four others. Some of the bombs were placed at doorsteps, others were shipped, puzzling investigators as they tried to calm a city in panic.

It was only through the incredible work of the police, FBI, and ATF that a suspect was identified, resulting in a Hollywood-like police chase and the eventual arrest of a suspect.

This session will take attendees inside one of the largest investigations and manhunts in the country. Det. David Fugitt of the Austin Police Department will map out the series of bombings, breaking down the clues and evidence that lead to finding the bomber and bringing Austin's month of fear to an end.

Investigating Tiger Girl and the Candy Kid: Bringing Historical True Crime to Life
In the midst of the Jazz Age a gang headed by Richard and Margaret Whittemore - AKA Tiger Girl and the Candy Kid - went on a year-long crime spree that netted more than a million dollars in cash and gems and resulted in the death of perhaps a half dozen men. Smarter, better looking, and far more successful than Bonnie and Clyde, Tiger Girl and the Candy Kid were front page news coast to coast, a romantic pairing as well known in the Roaring Twenties as Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are today.

Richard was the archetypal tough guy gangster, Margaret his beautiful and devoted, jewel-draped femme fatale. Together, for a brief time, they stole diamonds by day and then lived out their wildest fantasies by night rubbing shoulders with elite society in Manhattan's most-exclusive cabarets and restaurants.

In this CrimeCon exclusive, author Glenn Stout will bring their story to life while also revealing the unique process of researching historical crime, how he re-discovered the Whittemores, and how, despite the lack of police reports, FBI files, and trials transcripts he brought Tiger Girl and the Candy Kid back to life in a book the Wall Street Journal recently called “a hell of a yarn, worthy of an HBO hoodlum epic like Boardwalk Empire.”

Justice Through Genomics: Closure for Families by Solving "Unsolvable" Cold Cases
For a long time, it seemed as though decades-old cold cases might go unsolved forever. No justice for families, no punishment for perpetrators.

But the game has changed.

DNA left at crime scenes that was previously thought to be unusable is finding new life thanks to Othram, the first private lab to apply the power of modern parallel sequencing to forensic evidence. The number of cold cases that Othram is playing a part in reopening is astounding. From the 1974 murder of Carla Walker to the 1995 killing of Mary Catherine Edwards, Othram is partnering with law enforcement across the country to work on cases previously thought to be “unsolvable.” As Othram CEO David Mittelman told us recently, “It’s not a great time to be a rapist or murderer.”

This session will be part science and part cold case deep-dive, but all bad news for killers who’ve become accustomed to sleeping well at night. Come hear about the lab that is changing the course of history and learn how YOU can get involved in helping to decide which cases they take on next.

Suicide or Murder: What Really Happened to Libby Caswell in Room 319?
On December 11, 2017, 21 year-old single mother Libby Caswell was found dead in the bathroom of the Sports Stadium Inn in Independence, Missouri. When first responders arrived they found Libby’s body between the bathtub and toilet with a cloth belt around her neck.

But what happened that day in room 319 may not be all that it first seemed.

Libby’s death was ruled a suicide but her mother Cynthia was not buying it for a second. Looking for answers beyond what the system was providing, Cynthia turned to the country’s leading expert on strangulation: Dr. Bill Smock, Police Surgeon for the Louisville Metro Police Department.

In a CrimeCon exclusive, Dr. Smock will give attendees a firsthand look at the case that he calls “a completely staged suicide” and will show the why and, more important, the how, there was no way Libby hung herself. Attendees will also hear from Cynthia directly about the loving daughter and mother Libby was.

If you’ve seen Dr. Smock’s presentations from CrowdSolve Seattle or CrimeCon House Arrest you know you’re in for an intense, educational session from one of the world’s foremost authorities on neck trauma.

What Hell is Like: The Untold Story of the Toolbox Killers
Have you ever wondered what it's like to sit across from one of the world's most sadistic serial killers? Or to conduct a full investigation into a case to look for missing victims and buried evidence 40 years later?

Laura Brand, an investigator who became known as the “Siren Of San Quentin,” speaks publicly for the first time on her deep-dive into the infamous Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris, known as the “Toolbox Killers.”

Brand spent five years interviewing Bittaker and Norris, two of the most sadistic serial killers in American history, at San Quentin prision. She ultimately succeeded in getting Bittaker to reveal the locations of missing victims Cindy Schaefer and Andrea Hall, as well as evidence he’d buried in 1979.

In this must-see CrimeCon exclusive, Brand will break down her interviewing techniques and reveal how she conducted a thorough cold case investigation. Dr. Maurice Godwin will join her to deliver a profile of the unknown victims based on the geography of the San Gabriel mountains, the place where the Toolbox Killers brought their victims. Brand will tell the story with never-before-seen photos and maps, as well as previously unreleased audio from Bittaker and witnesses. RatSnakes: Inside the Explosive World of ATF's Undercover Agents
Get ready to infiltrate the dangerous, secret world of criminals and cover identities by way of the ATF, where the world’s greatest undercover agents are known as RatSnakes.

RatSnakes are rarely, if ever, visible to the public they move among and risk their lives to protect. In fact, thanks to their cover personas, they’re often assumed to be members of the clandestine criminal world they investigate. Real-life undercover work is a far cry from the sexy, candy-colored world you’ve seen in Hollywood movies. Only those strong and clever enough get inside and survive.

Vincent A. Cefalu would know. During his 30 years as an ATF undercover operative, he served undercover to investigate dangerous groups ranging from the Symbionese Liberation Army to Asian organized crime. He has infiltrated notorious outlaw motorcycle gangs as well as splinter groups of the Ku Klux Klan, and his memoir RatSnakes: Cheating Death by Living a Lie provides a transparent look at the organization and the operatives with whom he risked his life.

Pravin Varughese: A Mother's Fight For Justice
19 year old college student Pravin Varughese goes missing and turns up dead. Local law enforcement immediately writes his death off as a tragic accident, just another college kid drinking too much and freezing to death in the woods. A family fights for justice as they deal with pressure from law enforcement and city officials to just "let it go."

Behind the scenes, the police knew that Pravin had been with a stranger the night of his death, and this stranger had been telling his buddies that he had beat Pravin up that evening, but Pravin's mother Lovely was being told that the bruises on her son's face were post mortem discoloration.

We want to tell you about Pravin, and we want to hear directly from Lovely about the many roadblocks she faced in her over four year fight to get her son's attacker in front of a jury. We also want to discuss how law enforcement can be more compassionate, more communicative, and therefore, more effective. It's time we all work together to make sure every victim receives the respect they deserve, and every case receives the same amount of time and effort to solve. Come find out how, and let's start working together to make things better for everyone.

Victim F: From Crime Victims to Suspects to Survivors
In March 2015, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn awoke from a sound sleep right into a nightmare. Armed men bound and drugged them, then abducted Denise.

Warned not to call the police, Aaron agonized about what to do. He finally decided to put his trust in law enforcement and dialed 911. But instead of searching for Denise, the police accused Aaron of her murder. His story, they told him, was just too unbelievable.

When Denise was eventually released alive 48-hours later, the police turned their fire on her, dubbing her the “real-life ‘Gone Girl’” who had faked her own kidnapping.

Moderated by Victim F co-author, Nicki Egan, audiences will be the first in the world to hear from Aaron and Denise firsthand as they recount the horrific ordeal that almost cost them everything.

Denise and Aaron's new book, which will not be released publicly until June 8th, will be available for purchase exclusively for CrimeCon attendees.

[PLATINUM VIP ONLY] Breakfast with Beth Holloway: From Victim to Victor
You know the case: Natalee Holloway went missing while on trip to Aruba in 2005. Her body has never been found. Natalee’s mother Beth has begged and pleaded for answers on what happened to her daughter, and where her remains are located--but that resolution has never come for her.

Natalee is not the only victim in this case; it’s also the loved ones left behind who've had to handle the unfathomable burden in the aftermath in the aftermath of her death.

For years, Beth has endured false leads, on-line trolls, hoaxes, ridicule, and those preying on the vulnerability of a victim's grieving family. But that has not stopped her mission to help other families avoid what she's gone through.

In this special breakfast session only for Platinum VIP attendees, you'll hear the trials and tribulations that families must go through when loosing a loved one, and the media exposure that so often brings out the worst in people.

Light breakfast will be served. You must have a Platinum VIP badge to attend this session.

The Animal Beta Project
Featured in Netflix's "Don’t F**K with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer," the Animal Beta Project is a group of online sleuths who’ve joined forces to track down the perpetrators of animal cruelty found on the Internet. Over the past decade the Animal Beta Project has been influential in investigating and reporting on animal cruelty cases that have led to multiple arrests and convictions.

Join John Green, Muervet Douglas, and Deanna Thompson (aka “Baudi Moovan”) for this special session where attendees will be confronted with the truth about animal cruelty and how it can relate to other deviant behavior. The group will be joined by forensic psychologist Dr. Kris Mohandie, who will offer a deeper understanding of the psychology behind these perpetrators and why cruelty to animals can so often be a giant red flag toward future criminal acts.

The Animal Beta Project hopes to help educate attendees about these warning signs while also providing some practical advice about identifying acts we see on the Internet or in our neighborhoods that might not be as harmless as they first appear.

Building a Background: Would You Deny Them? [VIP ONLY]
Have you ever wondered what it takes to clear a background for law enforcement or for a security clearance? Do you have what it takes to work as a background investigator? Could you deny someone's opportunity for training or clearance based on the background you build with information provided to you by an applicant?

In this session, VIP attendees will learn how to determine if information is inaccurate, misleading, exaggerated or accurate and honest. During an interactive experience of Building a Background, YOU will make a determination on an applicant’s future.

You'll start your role as a new background investigator by digging through an applicant's life. You will decide if your applicant lying, hiding something or being truthful. You can rely on the information and data in front of you or use your gut instinct to decide. Either way, the question you'll need to answer by the end is: would you allow them to clear the background, or deny them the opportunity to move forward? The decision will be yours, but there is a twist: The applicants you'll be assessing are real and, by the end of the session, you'll know if you made the right choice.

This session is VIP-Only and will run twice back-to-back. VIPs are free to choose either running of this session to attend. Pre-registration is not required.

The Trial of Joe Exotic: Rightfully Convicted or Wrongfully Conspired?
In March 2020, just as the pandemic was shutting down the world, Netflix viewers were captivated by the incredible rise and fall of Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as “Joe Exotic.” If you watched Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness and found yourself wondering if the allegations and charges brought against Maldonado-Passage fit the evidence presented at trial, you are not alone.

Lead by Jim Rathmann, a former Secret Service agent and lead investigator for Investigation Discovery’s limited series, Joe Exotic: Tigers, Lies and Cover-up, attendees will participate in a deep exploration of the actual trial transcripts and will go through the scientific evidence and data presented to the jury.

According to Rathmann, there were significant gaps, inconsistencies, and contradictions present throughout the duration of Maldonado-Passage’s trial. Was Joe Exotic rightfully convicted…or was he wrongfully conspired against?

Come with an open mind and you just might be surprised by what you discover.

Practical Tactical: When Trusting Your Instincts Fails [VIP ONLY]
Two of the country's top experts in threat management, safety, and personal defense are joining forces at CC21 for this VIP-only session that just might save your life someday.

Spencer Coursen and Jason Hanson will start with helping attendees assess threats by bringing real-world situations to the stage. How do you react when your gut instincts scream 'run' but social norms dictate you do nothing? From a shady guy jumping in the elevator, to a strange car following on a dark road.

We're told to "follow our instincts" but, in the world of safety, these instincts are often wrong. And seasoned criminals know how to take advantage of them. When you find yourself in a bad spot, it's time to tap Jason's skills as one of the world's experts in self-defense. From how to get out of zip ties and duct tape, to why a tactical pen just might be the single best thing you can own for safety, this is a can’t miss workshop from two of the best in the business.

Be ready to participate, to engage, and to learn--opportunities like this don't come around very often!

DeOrr Kunz Jr.: The crimeHQ Cold Case Club
On July 10, 2015 a two-year-old boy named DeOrr Kunz Jr. went missing from a remote campground in Idaho. There has been no sign of him since, and no suspects have ever been charged in connection with the case despite intense public and private investigations.

Now, nearly six years later, crimeHQ has partnered with Nate Eaton, News Director and Reporter from East Idaho News who has covered the story from the beginning, to make the Kunz case the first "featured case" in its new online Cold Case Club.

In this session, Nate will take attendees through the facts of the Kunz case, from the initial 9-1-1 call to where things stand today. He'll tell you how you can get involved with him and crimeHQ to meet with key figures in the case and help put some fresh eyes on the evidence.

Surviving Castro: How a Lost Decade Created a Fierce Advocate
Gina DeJesus was kidnapped and held against her will by Ariel Castro for nine grueling years. But her story is not about being a victim, it’s about being a survivor who ensures other families do not endure what hers did.

Eight years ago the world witnessed a miracle when Gina was freed along with Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight. Just five years later Gina, along with her cousin Sylvia Colon, founded the Cleveland Center for Missing, Abducted and Exploited Children and Adults. Their goal is to establish a place for families and survivors to come for support and resources and to provide prevention training to communities around the country.

In this CrimeCon exclusive session, Gina and Sylvia will be joined by Newburgh Heights Police Chief and board director John Majoy for an educational and emotional hour showcasing what their organization is doing for victims and their families. But Gina’s story, and the cause she now champions, is not just about Ohio—it’s about spreading awareness and resources nationwide so that no family ever has to go through the most traumatic time of their lives alone.

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire: How to Know When Someone is Lying
Mark McClish, a retired Deputy U.S. Marshal, knows you're lying…and there are no good liars.

As the man who literally wrote the book on lying, the renowned Statement Analysis expert will arm CC21 attendees with the tools they need to find the fibbers in their own lives.

McClish has analyzed statements from almost every high-profile case imaginable (rabbit hole warning!)—from Bill Clinton to Chris Watts. Attendees will learn the most important parts of deception detection and the keywords that almost always indicate a lie. McClish will break it all down for attendees, providing practical tips to use at home. (Your kids are going to HATE this session!)

In addition to the tips and techniques, attendees will also hear about McClish’s analysis of a case in which a man was convicted of killing his wife and two young daughters in 1979 yet still maintains his innocence. Does this convicted killer’s statements provide further evidence of his guilt, or do they make McClish want to look more deeply into the evidence against him?

If you’re looking for a session with practical application to your everyday life, this is one you won’t want to miss!

Delphi Murders: Who Killed Abby and Libby?
“What keeps me going is thinking about the last hour...half hour of the girls life, everyday, someone knows something.” -Libby's grandfather Mike Patty at CrimeCon 2019

On February 13, 2017 Abigail Williams and Liberty German were brutally murdered in the middle of a day off from school. Libby’s sister Kelsi had dropped the girls off at the trails near the Monon High Bridge in Delphi, Indiana and never saw them again.

Since then, Kelsi has dedicated her life to seeking justice for Abby and Libby and helping other families who are going through this unthinkable heartache and devastation.

CrimeCon has followed this case since its first event in nearby Indianapolis the year the girls were killed and we will not give up until justice has been served. This year please join family members Kelsi German and Becky Patty along with HLN’s Susan Hendricks to go inside this unsolved double murder. They'll talk about the latest information in the case, including a recent, anonymous $100,000 donation that brings the total reward to $325,000. You will see the video from Libby's cell phone and hear his voice. Authorities say this is the monster who brutally murdered the 13 and 14 year old girls. Look close. Do you know him? The families need your help.

Join CrimeCon, HLN, and the family as their relentless and unwavering fight for justice continues.

Will this finally be the year?

The Face Behind the Charley Project
Many people have heard of the Charley Project, the internet's largest and most detailed privately run database of "cold case" missing persons. The Charley Project has almost 15,000 cases listed and is a major resource for law enforcement, journalists, podcasters and net detectives. What most people don't realize, however, is that it's run entirely by one person, an Indiana woman named Meaghan Good.

In this session attendees will meet Meaghan, the woman behind the Charley Project, and learn about her motivation, the site's purpose, and how it has helped solve multiple missing persons cases since its inception in 2004.

To Catch a Predator: Stories, Stings & Safety in the Age of Social Media
While one pandemic fades, another is still raging: sexual exploitation of children on the Internet. There has been a 40% increase in Internet crimes against children in just the last year.

Do you know what YOUR kids are doing on the Internet?

In this CrimeCon exclusive, legendary child-predator hunter and award-winning journalist Chris Hansen teams up with David Frattare, Commander of the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, to bring you a session that you cannot afford to miss.

Hansen and Frattare will take you behind the scenes of some of the nation’s biggest child-predator stings and busts while revealing potentially life-saving tips every parent needs to keep their child safe in the constantly-connected world of 2021.

Chat rooms, social media and mobile apps are a virtual playground that allows individuals to hide their true identity while gaining access to personal information. In the wrong hands, this information can be used to harass, threaten, or intimidate children, further putting them at risk.

Hansen and Frattare have seen it all so that you don’t have to. You’ll hear the stats, see the sting op videos, and, most importantly, get invaluable, practical tips from the two of the most relentless child predator hunters around.

You’re gonna wanna ‘take a seat” for this session…

CHASING COSBY: The Downfall of America’s Dad
How did Bill Cosby go from being America’s Dad to serving three to ten years in prison after being convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee, and accused of doing the same to more than 60 other women over the course of half a century?

Nicki Egan was the first reporter in the world to dig into the allegations against Cosby in 2005, when other reporters shied away, and will explain why it took another nine years for the allegations to take hold, who the enablers were that allowed him to get away with his crimes for so long and dispel the various rape myths this case highlights.

Cosby survivors Tamara Green and Therese Serignese, two of 13 other women who came forward with allegations of their own in 2005, will explain what prompted them to break their silence, the reaction they got and the impact coming forward had on them.

Red Flags: The Pulse Nightclub Shooting
For RED flags to work someone first has to raise them.

Dr. Massnick and Pierre Pacheco will walk attendees down the path of Omar Mateen, the Pulse nightclub shooter, who, for sixteen months, was the most prolific mass shooter in United States history. Sadly, this shooting will have its five year memorial the weekend following CrimeCon.

Dr. Massnick will take attendees through Mateen's early years and how he exhibited many of the red flags exhibited by other mass shooters. Those flags, however, did NOT go unnoticed or unreported. Attendees will see video from Mateen while he was a college student and will see firsthand the change in his behavior.

Finally, Pacheco will explain how he interviewed Mateen personally and will reveal some of the reasons as to why he alerted others to Mateen's behavior as well as denied him entrance into the police academy, which prevented him from becoming a law enforcement officer. Pacheco, along with three FBI agents, are the only people who have access to truly know and understand who the Pulse nightclub shooter really was.

BTK’s Daughter: A Conversation with Kerri Rawson
Kerri Rawson’s all-American life was shattered 16 years ago when the FBI arrested her father, Dennis Rader, and accused him of being BTK, the elusive “Bind, Torture, Kill” serial killer.

Rader, who’d been taunting law enforcement since killing four members of the Otero family in 1974, had been living a double-life: charming, churchgoing husband and father on the one hand, and sadistic serial killer when no one was watching.

The incomprehensible realization that someone you love and trust could be this violent person (Rader told investigators: “I’ve raised kids, I had a wife, [was] president of the church, been in Scouts. But, yeah, I have a mean streak in me…it occasionally flares up, takes control”) would be too much for most people to take, but Kerri has fought her way back—writing books, speaking, and becoming a mother herself.

Now, in this emotional session, HLN’s Susan Hendricks will take attendees up close and personal with Rawson as she shares how she picked up the pieces after the FBI knocked on her door that day, and how she is now making a difference for good—including helping to advance knowledge in the fields of victimology and criminology.

Detecting Lies: The Truth About Lie Detectors
Polygraph machines (a/k/a “lie detectors”) have become nearly ubiquitous in crime dramas and movies. But how much of what you see is fact and how much is Hollywood fiction?

Join polygraph examiner Lisa Ribacoff for a crash course and interactive experience focused on the myths vs. realities of the lie detector. What actually happens when someone is in the hot seat? Can someone ‘cheat’ on the exam? Does being willing to take a polygraph exam imply that person is innocent or truthful?

Lisa will be discussing the reasons why polygraph tests are administered in the first place and will show attendees the important differences between a “made-for-TV” exam and one that is performed in the course of a real investigation.

If you’ve ever been fascinated by the lie detector and its role in the criminal justice system this is a session you won’t want to miss.
